What counts as an emergency

Not every plumbing problem needs a same-day call. These do.

Burst or split pipe. Water running inside a wall, a ceiling, or across a floor.
No water from the well. Nothing from any tap. Pump not running, or running and not delivering.
Sewage backup. Waste coming up in a tub, a floor drain, or the lowest toilet in the house.
Water heater leaking. Water pooling under or around the tank, or a tank that is hissing or bulging.
Frozen pipes. No flow on a hard-freeze morning, or a pipe that has thawed and is now spraying.
A leak you cannot stop. Any leak that keeps going after you have closed the nearest shutoff.

A dripping faucet or a slow drain is not an emergency. Call anyway, we will schedule it. See plumbing repair and drain cleaning.

The first five minutes

What you do before Gary gets there matters more than anything he does after. In order:

Shut off the main. On a well, the valve is usually at the pressure tank. On town water, it is where the line enters the house or at the meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Kill power to the well pump. Find the breaker labeled pump or well and flip it off. A pump running with a burst line on the house side will keep pushing water until you stop it.
Water heater leaking? Shut it down. Close the cold supply valve on top of the tank. Flip the breaker for an electric heater, or turn the gas control to off on a gas one.
Open a low faucet. It drains pressure off the lines and slows what is still coming out of the break.
Sewage backing up? Stop using water. No flushing, no showers, no laundry. Every gallon you send down comes back up.
Then call or text. (804) 432-4000. Tell Gary what you see and what you have already shut off.

If you do not know where your shutoff is, go find it this week. It is the single most useful thing you can do before an emergency.

Honest availability

We are not going to tell you we are always available, because that would be a lie and you would find out at the worst time. Here is the truth. Text if the call does not go through. Cell service is thin across a lot of Charlotte and Lunenburg counties, and a text will often land where a call drops. Put what is happening and where you are in the message. Phenix to Charlotte Court House is about ten minutes, Brookneal fifteen, Keysville twenty, Farmville about thirty-five. You will get a real time, not a window.
